Mooseage Board Baldy Group Climb - 02/08/08 : Kurt was in town to do Part I of his Whitney presentations and decided to invite people up for a climb of Mt. Baldy. Seven of us headed up the bowl and then skied/glissaded down from the summit. Of the 3 of us who skied, Kurt was the only on who could claim to have stayed on skis all the way back to the road. (Steve and I walked about a hundred feet of mostly melted out trail.) I'd have to say that this was the best day ever on Baldy! Sea To Summit: Mt. Baldy/Harwood - 08/24-25/2007 : I headed up to Mt. Baldy on Friday afternoon. I arrived at the village just around dark and sat at the Mt. Baldy Lodge restaurant until nearly 9:30pm before heading up the road on foot. I had been thinking about camping at Manker Flats, or the Sierra Club Ski Hut, but wound up sleeping up at Baldy Notch. The next morning, I hung around until 8:00am waiting to get access to water and food. (The Lodge opens at 7:00am, but doesn't start serving food until 8:00am.) After breakfast, I headed up to the summit of Mt. Baldy via the Devil's Backbone Trail. While on the summit, Mike, Rick G, Laura, Cy and Ellen arrived. I was almost convinced that it would be fun to continue on for the Six Peaks (-1, as I skipped doing West Baldy), but after climbing up Mt. Harwood, I knew I didn't want to do any more climbing. We hung around at the Baldy Notch for a while before I headed down to the Village via the Fire Road and Mt. Baldy Road. I picked up my bike and cruised down to Claremont for a motorized ride home. Sea To Summit : It actually took 3 tries to get this done! (3rd time is the charm?) June 15-16, 2007: MapPoint gave me a route that had me head up Glendora Mountain Road to Big Dalton Canyon. Since I was not familiar with the area, I did not know that the canyon road is closed to the publc. By the time I realized this, I had put in a couple of extra miles of climbing. I headed down and then up Glendora Mountain Road again, but "ran out of gas" a few miles up and headed home. June 22-23, 2007: I took a more "southerly" route and it ended up being around 80 miles to where I turned around on Mt. Baldy Road. I do think that I could have gotten it done as I was only 1000' vertical and about 4 1/2 miles from the village. (I didn't consider the fact that I had to stop many times on the way up to be "in style.") I made the day a good one by riding to the Covina MetroLink Station, making the ride a Century. June 29-30, had me taking a route that I created myself (rather than asking the mapping software to do it) that combined the best of the "northern" and "southern" routes. Mt. Baldy Village was reached in less than 60 miles, but the final 5 are killer when you're not in shape for a moutain road like this. It seemed to take forever to get up the Bear Canyon Trail. There were a fairly large number of people on the summit. I headed down the Ski Hut Trail and bummed a ride back to the village where I met a woman who put me in my place. She noticed that my pack was open (on purpose, as I had a bunch of sweat soaked clothes in there that I wanted to dry) and stopped me to let me know. When I mentioned that I had ridden an S2S, she said she's also into cycling and stated that she's ridden up to the Ski Resort 128 times! On a mountain bike! To top that, she's was obviously older than I am! I had a good meal and quite a bit to drink at the Mt. Baldy Lodge Restaurant. I coasted down to the Claremont MetroLink station for the trip back home. There are 17 photos in the gallery. The first 3 (of the beach) were taken on June 22, 2007, the 4th on June 23rd and the rest on June 30th.

Bear Canyon -> Ski Hut Trail - February 9, 2007 : Another late start after giving my wife a ride to work. It was heavy overcast all day. I felt a snowflake hit my forehead as I was on the traverse across the shoulder of West Baldy. It was also very windy, but the wind was not bone-chilling. This was my first climb as a 51 year-old. January 19, 2007 Group Climb : Kurt Wedberg, just back from another expedition in South America, was doing some Mt. Whitney presentations in Southern California and offered to head up another trip to Mt. Baldy. The weather was much warmer than a week earlier, but the wind decided to blow. We headed up past the Ski Hut and saw that the conditions were not ideal, so we headed back down the mountain. A group of six finished up the trip with a meal at the Mt. Baldy Lodge Restaurant. Several of us also showed up for Kurt's presentation in West Los Angeles. There are 30 photos in the gallery.

West Fork / Bear Canyon Trail - December 10, 2006 : I had been planning on doing the Big Baldy Loop, but as I headed up the Bear Canyon Trail, I decided I'd give Lookout Mountain a try. (I figured I could either head back down to Bear Flat, or maybe traverse over to the Bear Canyon Trial.) There was a good use trail heading up the West Fork of Bear Canyon. I didn't bring a map, so I didn't realize that I needed to "backtrack" after gaining the ridge. I ended up contouring over to the Bear Canyon Trail. With the wind scrubbing the "west" side of the mountain, there were drifts beyond a foot deep in places. The wind also made the summit an uncomfortable place to be with lots of swirling snow. I ended up heading down the Ski Hut Trail and walking down the road back to Ice House Canyon. There are 37 photos in the gallery.

Bighorn Sheep Sightings - 10/10/06 : I was beginning to wonder whether I was ever going to see another Bighorn sheep in the Mt. Baldy area. A few months ago, I had seen a group of four near the summit and then saw a large herd bolt as I made the traverse under West Baldy on my way back to the village. Since that time, I hadn't seen any, in spite of spending countless hours hiding out in waiting. Well, the drought has finally been broken. We saw a single sheep crossing a game trail near the Ski Hut during our group climb. On the way down, we saw two more sheep below the hut. Spectacular day! There are 21 photos in the gallery.

Ice House Canyon -> Ski Hut Trail - 08/23/06 : The Big Baldy Loop (Counterclockwise and abridged). I headed up Ice House Canyon, across the Three Tee's Trail, up the Devil's Backbone and down the Ski Hut Trail. I mounted a telephoto zoom to the camera before I left the car, hoping I'd run into the Bighorn Sheep flock somewhere along the trail (it didn't happen), so there are some bizarre pictures in the album. (The fact that it was very hot out and I was on the verge of heat stroke probably also has something to do with it.) There are 43 photos in the gallery.

Devil's Backbone -> Ski Hut Trail - 08/16/06 : I really wasn't in the mood to do any hiking in the local mountains, but thought I'd head up in search of the elusive Bighorn Sheep. Since I hadn't been up the Devil's Backbone in quite a while, I decided I'd hike up the fireroad to Baldy Notch and then up the backbone to the summit. On the way up, I ran into a father and son who were heading down the backbone after having spent the night at the Ski Hut. (I found it odd that they'd be carrying full loads over the summit, but then maybe it's a workout for them.) When asked, they mentioned that they had run across a woman who had seen the sheep. I spent several hours near the summit waiting for the sheep to appear, but it never happened. I hiked down the Ski Hut Trail. There are 36 photos in the gallery.

7/12/06 - Bear Canyon Trail : Getting in a little exercise in preparation for Horeseshoe Meadows to Whitney Portal. It was almost unbearably hot on the trail and the brush was overgrowing the trail in many spots. Interesting views of the fires off to the east from the summit of Baldy. 06/06/06 San Antonio Ridge Attempt : I've had this crazy idea of linking the Bear Canyon Trail with a traverse back and forth across the San Antonio Ridge with a return via the Devil's Backbone Trail. It turns out it's much more difficult and time consuming than I expected. I made Gunsight Notch before being forced to turn around. I wanted to summit Baldy, so I ended up hiking down the Ski Hut Trail and walking back to the village in the dark. There are 49 photos in the gallery.

January 8, 2006 : I needed to do a "make up" climb of Mt. Baldy since I failed to reach the summit a week earlier. The weather was nice, so I headed up the Bear Canyon Trail. Knowing that I wouldn't have the daylight needed to return down the same path, I decided I would try and catch a ride from someone at the Manker Flats trailhead after descending via the Ski Hut Trail. As I approached the summit, I noticed that there were people on top. After a short conversation, they offered me a ride back to the village if I was willing to climb down via the Devil's Backbone with them. I was real interested in seeing what it looked like with snow, so I agreed. The chair lift was still running when we arrived at Baldy Notch after 5:00pm, so we didn't have to walk the fire road down to the cars. There are 42 photos in the gallery.

January 1, 2006 Attempt : The original plan was to make an attempt on Iron Mountain, but I didn't get out of bed when the alarm clock went off. Since the Ski Hut Trail only requires half a day, I decided I'd give it a try. The icy conditions above the Ski Hut prevented me from making it beyond about 9500 feet. After returning to the Service Road, I headed up to Baldy Notch. I was surprised by the number of people in the area. I'm guessing that a lot of them thought the earlier storm had dumped enough snow to create a fun time. Unfortunately, only a couple of inches of slush fell. There are 34 photos in the gallery.

November 27, 2005 : Another acclimatization hike up Mt. Baldy. I hiked up the Bear Canyon Trail and down the Devil's Backbone Trail. As I was approaching the summit Eric was finishing off his hike up the Ski Hut Trail. We hiked back down to Manker Flats together, and he was nice enough to give me a ride back to the village after I begged him for a ride down. There are 16 photos in the gallery.

November 25, 2005 : One month 'till Christmas, and I finally bought an Adventure Pass. I wanted to get in some time at altitude prior to a trip up to Whitney. I headed up in the afternoon, with the intention of staying to watch the sunset from the summit. The howling wind made the summit feel incredibly cold. Walking time was about four hours, with another two hours spent on the summit. There are 36 photos in the gallery.

June 25, 2005 : Six months 'till Christmas, and no Adventure Pass required! Errands kept me busy in the morning, so I wasn't able to make the trailhead until right around noon. I had been planning on hiking up the Ski Hut Trail and descending via the Devil's Backbone, but I wasn't paying attention, and ended up reversing my direction of travel. The climb up wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, with the ascent taking a little over three hours at a leisurely pace. Parts of the climb reminded me of Mt. Adams, up in Washington. The altitude must have gotten to me. I was planning on heading down via the Ski Hut Trail, but missed the junction, and ended up on the Bear Canyon Trail. This added quite a bit of distance and time to the day. There are 25 photos in the gallery.
